China Surpasses 100 New International Air Cargo Routes in 2026: Fifth Freedom Rights, Domestic Freighters and Network Expansion

China’s air cargo network continues to expand rapidly in 2026, with new international and domestic freighter routes launching across the country, connecting regional economies, supporting cross-border trade and upgrading logistics capacity for high-value and perishable goods.

Haikou Meilan Launches Tbilisi–Haikou–Milan Fifth Freedom Cargo Route

On August 1, a fifth-freedom all-cargo route operated by Georgian Airways officially launched, linking Tbilisi (Georgia), Haikou (Hainan, China) and Milan (Italy) in a single service.

This marks another fifth-freedom cargo route opened at Haikou Meilan International Airport this year. As of 2026, Haikou Meilan operates a total of 9 international cargo routes, including 3 fifth-freedom services, connecting 10 international destinations. The network now forms an initial international cargo framework covering Europe, West Asia and Southeast Asia.

Shihezi–Zhengzhou All-Cargo Route Makes Maiden Flight

On July 31, a Boeing 737-800F all-cargo aircraft operated by Zhongyuan Longhao Airlines landed at Shihezi Huayuan Airport, greeted with a traditional water salute ceremony to mark the inaugural flight.

  • Inbound flight GI4225: Departed Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport at 6:30 a.m. and arrived in Shihezi after 3 hours and 50 minutes, carrying 18.8 tonnes of e-commerce express parcels mainly from Guangzhou and Shenzhen. After unloading, inbound goods are transported overland to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport for onward export to Central Asia via international flights.
  • Outbound flight GI4226: Departed Shihezi at 2:00 p.m. carrying 19.93 tonnes of fresh Xinjiang cold-chain specialties, including 14.5 tonnes of premium “Paotai Hong” melons, Kashgar plums and Xinjiang dairy products, arriving in Zhengzhou at around 6:00 p.m.

Total cargo throughput for the day reached 38.73 tonnes.

The route is coordinated by Xinjiang Shuanggang Industrial Investment and Development Co., Ltd. and is scheduled to operate from July 31 to September 30, with no fewer than 30 round-trip flights adjusted flexibly based on outbound logistics demand. The service enables high-quality Xinjiang agricultural products – peaches, melons, yams, beef, mutton and dairy – to reach Zhengzhou directly, and then be distributed nationwide via Zhengzhou’s national logistics hub network. It also consolidates Shihezi’s position as a northern Xinjiang air cargo distribution node for Central Asia cross-border trade.

Lhasa–Ezhou Freighter Route Supports Tibetan Specialty Exports

The Lhasa–Ezhou all-cargo route, Tibet’s first regular commercial all-cargo trunk route, has completed one full year of operation since its maiden flight in July 2025.

During the peak matsutake mushroom harvest season in Nyingchi, fresh wild matsutake is transported via dedicated cold-chain logistics and all-cargo service, reaching Ezhou, Hubei from origin in just one day. One third of the flight’s capacity is reserved for matsutake transport, at rates 90% below the average market price.

Freight rates on the route start as low as ¥2.45 per kg, up to 95% cheaper than average market rates. Since launch, the service has saved cooperating enterprises over 13 million yuan in logistics costs, with over 80% of partner businesses being local private enterprises.

Going forward, Tibet Airport New Area will deepen port trade services, expanding the air logistics channel to cover more plateau specialty products such as yak meat, Tibetan honey and highland barley products, helping “Tibet-branded” goods reach national markets more efficiently.

FedEx Launches Direct Guangzhou–Sydney Cargo Route

FedEx has announced the launch of a direct all-cargo route between Guangzhou and Sydney, further enhancing the hub capability of its Asia-Pacific transshipment center in Guangzhou.

The service operates five weekly flights using Boeing 777 freighters, and is expected to reduce transit times by up to one day for shipments from major Asian markets – including South China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines – with delivery to Australia in as fast as two business days.

China has been Australia’s largest trading partner, largest export destination and largest import source for 16 consecutive years. In 2025, China’s total trade with Australia reached 1.47 trillion yuan, with exports exceeding 546 billion yuan, up 8.5% year over year.

Ivy Xu, President of FedEx China, stated that strengthening the direct Guangzhou–Sydney link helps Chinese companies enter the Australian market faster, improves network reliability and builds more flexible supply chains for cross-border business expansion.

China Tops 100 New International Air Cargo Routes in 2026

According to the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing (CFLP), as of July 31, 2026, China had opened 103 new international air cargo routes year-to-date, adding 229 weekly round-trip flights. Eleven new routes were launched in July alone.

Route Structure

New routes are concentrated on Asian and European markets:

  • Asia: 51 routes
  • Europe: 38 routes
  • North America: 12 routes
  • Africa: 2 routes
  • South America: 1 route

The industry is shifting route expansion focus toward Asian markets while steadily developing emerging cargo corridors in Africa and North America, reducing reliance on a single European market and building a more diversified, balanced route network.

Cargo Mix

New routes primarily carry cross-border e-commerce goods, high-end manufacturing products, high-value-added goods, electronics and automotive parts.

Ma Zengrong, Vice President and Secretary General of CFLP, noted that AI hardware exports have become the core growth engine for air cargo. Surging overseas demand for domestic AI storage, computing equipment and semiconductors is driving strong demand for air transport, as high-value, time-sensitive products are prioritized for air shipment by enterprises.
